With regards to the article on Band 2's blog, I agree with the writer that we should seize every opportunity to have fun and relax while enjoying our childhood. In this time and age, especially Singapore as it is a very competitive country. Teachers and parents stress the children way too hard as paper qualifications are a must to get a good job. Singapore having no natural resources, have to produce human talent and the education system stresses the importance of studying to every student. However, this has created a negative impact on the students. Students receive tons of homework daily and the average secondary school student have about 4-6 tests per week while the homework are too piling up. The amount of homework students nowadays are receiving daily are 3 days worth of homework compared to other countries. In Singapore, the average student receives more than 2 hours worth of homework not including the time needed to study for tests. Most students like me have been deprived of a good night sleep for a very long time. We stay up to finish the immense amount of homework given to us by the teachers. As students, we hardly have any time to enjoy or childhood because of the rigid education system in Singapore. I disagree that homework helps the student get better grades because like what the writer mentioned "An unwilling student cannot learn anything". Students nowadays are too stressed out that some resorted to suicide as seen in the news. I feel that this problem will go on until the Ministry of Education does something about it before it goes out of hand. Especially so during the holidays, before the holidays our teachers will pile tons of homework on us before we can get to enjoy the holidays. By definition, holidays are meant to allow students to recharge and relax to get ready for the next term. However, because of the pressure from parents and teachers, we RARELY get a chance to rest as we are too busy doing the work to satisfy them. I agree with the writer, studies can wait however our childhood cannot. Many Singapore children nowadays have began studying very hard even though they are as young as Primary 1. We the students are being robbed of our childhoods and dreams because of such stress and pressure.

Hi Jacob, I STRONGLY AGREE with you about being deprived of sleep! Ever since Sec 3, gigantic eye bags and panda eyes have been forming for me, and most of us. And because of the lack of sleep, after school when I get home I have absolutely no mood to do my homework, and take a nap instead, wasting my afternoon. However, I do think that homework helps students get better grades as many subjects require lots of practice, so the more we practise, the better we get. :D
ReplyDeleteI strongly agree with you that Singapore is a very competitive country. With the influx of migrants and increasing number of graduates in Singapore annually, job hunting has indeed become more challenging. Maybe this is probably one of the reasons why parents are trying to take away their children's childhood, unintentionally. They are actually hoping that their kids do better but they turn out to be harming them. Still, I believe that all parents in this world love their children and will definitely not want to destroy their future in any way.
